If I am reading a fairy tale/story about an animal, I like to take them to the smartboard first and learn about the REAL animal before we read the story
One thing I like to do is have the kids make Khan Academy type of learning videos using any of several iPad apps. The videos can be about how to do something in the library, or how to research something, or even a short book trailer.
Cool idea! WHEN do you have kids do this?
looking forward to a great session today

I love collecting books before my students come to the library. I get all their books checked in before they come to me. I have a little pocket that I have attached to my book tubs that have renew cards in it. If a student wants to renew a book they just put a card in the book, visible so that I can see it when I am checking in books. I have the book waiting for them when they come to library, I know who has overdue books, and we don't spend valuable time checking in books during our time together.
Small groups work great in the library!
We have 13 library computers. In order for all students to have computer time I divide up my students into "A" team and "B" team. "A" team is tables 1-4, and "B" team is tables 5-8.
During whole group instruction, I instruct the students on the computer research assignment (PIONEER, etc). I teach, demo, then it's their turn. They follow instructions on my SmartBoard, I have "A" team start on computers while "B" team browses the collection and checks out their books. Then, after 10 min., we switch. This works especially well for grades 4-6.
I love screening the Newspaper editorials and then reading through them with the 5th and 6th grade when they are writing opinions. You have to really screen them for appropriate language and subjects first.
I love Library Dragon to teach about the library rules and how to treat books. I put cans together with tape and covered it with paper Mache'. I put a small bowl in the mouth. In the bowl is dry ice and I squirt water from a water bottle. The dragon breathes out vapors. The children are mesmerized. I use a cloth glove and let the children see the ice.
I KNOW the rest of you will be willing to share your library ideas with everyone! Just like I'm sharing MY ideas with you today! :)
